Locksmithing 101 — DAY 1 of 2

This two-day course is for the beginner/apprentice, and the experienced locksmith looking to expand their knowledge of the trade. It focuses on terminology and basic skill sets, with a combination of hands-on exercises and class work. It provides a solid explanation of the tools you will need, and the product types you will see in the field. This is one of the best overall sources of basic information on the locksmith trade. Materials needed: Students should bring pliers, tweezers, a screwdriver set, file (perferably fine tooth pippin) and any magnifying equipment or pick set they typically might use. CLASS #12 Cost: $175.00 Basic Safe Penetration
Instructor: Roy D Watters, CRL, CPS
This class will prepare the student to add safe opening to their portfolio of services. The day is spent with a morning lecture on topics such as preparation, planning, tools, techniques, and resources. In the afternoon, the students will form workgroups and experience safe penetration as a hands-on opportunity. The student will plan their opening and then execute their plan. This basic class allows the student to make notes, photograph and drill fire safes; “B” and “C” rated safes and containers up to TL30 classification depending on availability. Each safe will be opened more than once, allowing each workgroup a variety of experiences.
The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-24, L-33 and STPRP Section S-00.

This hands-on class gives instruction on the E-Plex 5000 electronic lock and optional software. Training will be provided on the ease of installation, use and maintenance of the electronic lock series. We will demonstrate the simplicity of keypad programming, and the optional data transfer with a handheld PDA, including audit trail. Upon successful completion, students will understand the product features, benefits, installation and both keypad and software programming. The cost of this class includes a $175 lab fee. CLASS #14 Cost: $175.00 Basic Auto Lock Service
Instructor: Raymond D’Adamo, CML
Students already familiar with basic lock service will be introduced to the tools, skills and information, critical for beginning professional automotive lock service. All fundamental topics will be covered. Learning the basic terminology and procedures of automotive cylinder and key service is the theme throughout the day. Hands-on clinics will include key blank identification, referencing and cutting keys by code, function and operation of common automotive cylinder types, basic lock manipulation, disassembly and re-assembly, keying and re-keying, general cylinder repair service and fitting first keys.
Materials needed: selection of hand tools, such as screwdrivers, an awl, files, lock picks, possibly a small clamp-on vise, a small hammer and any additional tool you feel will be helpful for bench work.
CLASS #15 Cost: $100.00 Ingersoll Rand Low Energy Automatic Operators
Compliance with accessibility requirements continues to be a very lucrative portion of the door and hardware business. The ability to provide these solutions, while maintaining reasonable levels of security, can set you apart from your competition. You will learn the operation, controls and settings for Low Energy Automatic Operators from Ingersoll Rand, including the LCN 4600, 4800, and Senior Swing lines as well as the new Falcon 8200 series. Hands-on sessions will allow you the chance to connect both hard wired and RF actuators, add security controls, interface with a variety of electromechanical hardware, and interface with access control systems. This seminar begins with a history of transponders and how they work. Hands-on class training introduces the various equipment necessary to clone, duplicate and originate automobile transponder keys, including Ilco’s TD3A ll, RW4, EZ Clone, and the TKO equipment. Students will receive an updated Key Blank Reference Guide containing a listing of automobile transponder keys, programming procedures and a complete listing of current transponder key availability. Topics include identifying proper key type, methods to program keys, and information pertaining to security fobs and keyless entry. Programming of transponder keys for most automobiles will be covered. Prerequisites: Working Knowledge of Basic Automobile Keying. |

“Be the Lock.” The best two-day investment any safe technician can make. Learn how to open U.L. listed Group 2 combination locks through the use of touch, sight, and sound. If you have struggled with correspondence courses, books, or other methods then this is the class for you. Throw away those graphs and charts and learn real manipulation in just two days! The student should have a good understanding of safe lock basics before taking this class. CLASS #22 Cost: $175.00 Servicing Aluminum Storefront Doors

Learn about aluminum storefront doors and frames, and their unique hardware. Door/frame construction, locks, closers, pivots, and other hardware will be presented with an emphasis on installation, servicing, adjustments, and retrofitting techniques. Improving security on these doors will also be discussed. Some hands-on will be involved. Although handouts are included in the class, students will have the option of purchasing the Aluminum Stile Door Service & Repair Manual by Jake Jakubuwski for a special reduced price of $100.00. Materials to bring to class: Allen wrenches and a set of screwdrivers.
Prerequisite: Basic Locksmithing. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-28.
CLASS #23 Cost: $175.00 Basics in Electrical Locking & Wiring

This informative hands-on seminar begins with an overview of hardware terminology. Basic requirements of a single door access control system are covered. The use, wiring and operation of both electric strikes and electromagnetic locks are discussed. Working in teams, you will wire and program single door locking systems, including fire alarm interface, while learning basic understanding of building codes and Life Safety Requirements. Within this class you will also learn basic troubleshooting, using a multimeter to quickly and easily identify and repair problems within your systems. Each person attending will be registered in a drawing to win a free RCI 6-series strike & frame prep jig as well as receiving additional promos. This seminar is a must for those interested in gaining more knowledge in basic electric locking and access control applications/installation.
CLASS #24 Cost: $175.00 High Security Automotive Lock Service
Instructor: Raymond D’Adamo, CML
This course is designed for students already proficient in intermediate automotive lock service and are ready to reach beyond two dimensions and enter the world of three dimensional automotive lock service. During this course, the fuzzy realm of Lexus, Saab, Mercedes Benz, and all the others come into focus. Hands on clinic highlights include duplicating a key, cutting code keys, decoding a cylinder and fitting a fully functional first key. Students will disassemble, re-assemble, key and re-key different system cylinders and effect repairs to damaged units where feasible. Many other topics, such as alarm systems, valet systems, air bag and transponder systems will also be covered as well as a product review, during which, students will identify the unique characteristics of each manufacturer and practice where feasible, the fastest methods of key making and service.
Materials to bring to class: laptop with an installed vehicle key code database, a selection of bench tools & lock picks, a clamp-on vise & high security locks that may have been a challenge to them in the past.

This is an informative session that will assist locksmiths in asking proper questions and closing more sales, while generating recurring revenue with Kaba products. The class includes demonstrations for upgrading existing locks and hardware. Students will receive an overview of Kaba’s mechanical and electronic pushbutton locks and the newest Kaba products. This is a fun class and offers opportunity for locksmith to locksmith exchange. Some of the best teachings we receive are from fellow locksmiths. Prerequisites: Basic understanding of locksmith terms and general installations. |

Safe Manipulation — DAY 2 of 2 Instructor: Mark Bates, CPL

This hands-on class is geared toward the locksmith who is serious about mastering motorcycle key generation. The average locksmith already possesses most of the equipment necessary to jump into the motorcycle market. Learn what else is needed to become the “go-to guy.” Upon completion, the student should have the skills necessary to service a broad range of bikes in a professional manner. Attendees should have a working knowledge of cutting keys by code, basic lock picking, and key blank identification. Automotive locksmithing experience would be helpful, but is not necessary. While all necessary tools will be available, every student is encouraged to bring the tubular picks, wafer depressors, otoscopes or opthalmascopes that they will be using in the field when they return to work after the convention. Instructors adapt the material to the tools the students brings, and it also exposes the other students to different brands of tools and equipment. Students will receive a handout with useful information that will supplement the resources available. While the instructors will be recommending various tools and publications, you will learn to make keys with what you have at hand and a few inexpensive items that you may or may not already have. Motorcycle transponders and high security keys such as BMW will not be covered due to time restraints.
CLASS #32 Cost: $175.00 Exit Devices & Exit Alarms

A wealth of information will be covered on exit devices, including types, functions, ratings, options, installations, repairs and servicing. Hands-on practice, as well as slides, videos and handouts will be provided. Students will be instructed on how to properly remove, service, troubleshoot malfunctions, and retrofit many of the popular exit devices. This class has been updated to include delayed exit devices that comply with NFPA 101. Materials to bring to class: Common and Phillips screwdrivers and an Allen wrench set.
CLASS #33 Cost: $175.00 Impressioning and Wafer (Disk) Reading

This course teaches the beginner or specialist to fit keys to wafer locks by the scope reading method or by the impressioning technique , both with and without specialized tools. Students will hand file keys to popular types of utility locks based upon their observations related to what they have learned. Many of these products have no readily available replacements and no published codes, so the skilled locksmith can benefit greatly from learning to perform this skill well. A large portion of the course is hands-on, so attendance is limited. CLASS #34 Cost: $175.00 Electrical Hardware Selection & Installation

This class is a must for those interested in gaining more knowledge in basic electric locks, including access control applications and installations. The seminar is designed to offer an understanding of basic hardware terminology, lock grades & testing, and how to plan an installation and the fundamentals of installing electric strikes and electromagnetic locks. Seminar includes hands-on installation demonstration of how to cut in a strike in a hollow metal frame.
